i bought this amazing little carving of a buddha, freshly imported from thailand.
i live in a very dry & cold climate (canadian prairies). how to best protect it from cracking and drying up?

bring it inside/ use a sealant.
Turpentine thinned linseed oil repeatedly applied will help preserve the wood and enhance the color. But speaking in terms of respect for the buddha why not construct a shrine or stuppa for the traditional way of protection.
contact home depot and talk to their tech support people. They’re excellent. They should be able to recommend a protective varnish that you could spray or brush on (water proof, etc.) same stuff they use on decks, outdoor furniture, etc.
