Usually, good luck will depend on your faith and your trust in Buddha’s teaching. But if you want to put a Buddha statue, it must be an altar right, because Buddha statue without altar is just a kind of furniture. Altar for Buddha is often in the place where there are always light, day light and night night (elec. light). The best position for an altar is where sunlight come in!

Not particularly. The jolly Buddha statues are a bit excessive in my opinion though. Before his self-actualization, Buddha supposedly deprived himself for months, living sometimes off of one grain of rice a day. Eventually he did bulk up (according to chronological scriptures) and passed on as a regularly sized person, and there’s not much evidence to show that he was ever as rotund as he’s now depicted.
You’re supposed to rub its belly for good luck. Elephant figures shoould have the trunk facing the door.
