Not very enlightened behavior from those who want to put the statue there. Seems like a waste of resources. Buddhism is about finding enlightenment, not about erecting obnoxiously large statues. Heck, a Zen master would probably come along and tell the builders to burn the statue to the ground.
It makes me wonder how many of those poor, unfortunate Indian farmers could be fed with the money that it being wasted to build a monument to “loving-kindness” and relocate the very farmers themselves…
Waste of funds. Thats what I think.
I think they should do it only if they
pay the farmers good money and give them land around the structure!
Well, it is always very dangerous to believe what you read in the media. Controversy is their business, so you could have a project with 99.99 percent support, and they would still play it as a them-vs-us controversy. That is what sells stories.
As a buddhist myself, I understand the extent to which buddhist holy sites have been eradicated by the Chinese and the Taliban, so I understand if some people have a wish to reclaim the heritage lost in the form of a new site. However, I also have to say that the root of Buddhism is not to cause suffering, and that $250 million could go a long way toward relieving suffering. I’d also say the Buddha was not a god and never claimed to be one; I’m not him, but I doubt he’d think too much of this. On the other hand he’d see it all as illusory and empty. Even if the statue DOES last a thousand years, it is still impermanent and thus not worth obsessing about.
Christians love to support the construction and preservation of Idols.

I don’t live in India so I have no say in the matter.
