What Is That Little Space In One’s Home Where They Pray For A Passed Relative, Or Sometimes To Buddha?

You know when you see in movies, Asian people praying to this little corner in the room, that has burning incense, usually a framed photograph of someone that has passed away, candles, or sometimes a statue of Buddha. What is this called?

A shrine. Catholics do it too.
Interesting question.
they aren’t praying…buddhists worship their elders to show respect…the incense thing is an influence by hinduism….
i read a very interesting answer on this once by a sri lankan theravadha buddhist.she had said that even as adults ,they physically bend down to the ground and worship their parents and teachers etc because buddhism teaches respect for elders…if the parent is dead, they use a photo…
it’s the same with buddha statues, they treat the buddha as the greatest teacher ever and since he’s no more they worship a statue or a picture.however this is NOT something preached by the buddha…he never expected anything like that in return from his followers
oh yes and the little space is a “shrine”
Just a space on a mat.
I dunno coz I don’t pray to any picture or a buddha, I pray directly to God
